How accurate is a lie detector test?
The current accuracy of a professionally conducted lie detector test, using modern techniques and computerized systems, is as
much as 98%, providing it is carried out in a quiet, distraction free environment.
Can someone cheat a lie detector test?
No. They can try; and there are web sites that give instructions on how to beat a lie detector test. Polygraph examiners are
trained to spot countermeasures. On a lie detector test, polygraph examiners look for involuntary reactions. Countermeasures
would either be intended to suppress those reactions, or make voluntary reactions at different points of the charts. When
someone does this voluntarily, it is obvious to a trained polygraph examiner.
Do nerves affect the lie detector test?
No. The first chart run on a lie detector test is an acquaintance, or stimulation test, which shows the examiner your general
nervous tension and apprehension on an un-scored chart. During the rest of the charts, your nerves and apprehension will
show throughout the charts. Reactions related to deception are specific, localised, consistent reactions that are well over and
above your general nervous tension and apprehension.
When will I be given the results?
You will be given the results verbally on the same day, once the testing is complete. The subject being tested will be given the
results first, and afforded the opportunity to explain any reactions relating to deception (this will not be the case if more than one
person is to be tested on the same issue). You will then receive a written report in the post.
Can I be present whilst someone else is taking the lie detector test?
No. A lie detector test is a psychophysiological veracity examination. The only people present while testing takes place will be
the examiner and the subject (person being tested). The only exception to this is when an interpreter is required. An Interpreter
must be a neutral person, who the subject being testing is unfamiliar with.
How many questions can be asked on a lie detector test?
It is recommended that we ask as few as possible. The most accurate lie detector tests are those based on just one question. The
recommended maximum number of questions is three, and should all relate to the same issue.
Where can a lie detector test be conducted?
It is recommended that you come to one of our offices for a lie detector test. Our offices provide a neutral, quiet, distraction free
environment. We can come to your premises to conduct a lie detector test at no extra charge providing there is a quiet, distraction free
room with a table and chair, and no children or animals are present. We can arrange an office or conference room in a more suitable
location at an extra cost.
